International #CityHallSelfie Day 2018

If you thought that there were no holidays in August, have I got news for you! Yesterday was the biggest municipal extravaganza of the year–and if you were doing it right, your city hall was likely swarmed by amateur paparazzi filling up their phones with self-portraits.

Yes, it was International #CityHallSelfie Day and social media is awash in images that are breathtaking, blurry, coordinated, spontaneous, utilitarian, and artistic.

Here at The Chronicles, we have worked nonstop to curate the most compelling city council selfies of the day. The criteria were that the photos must:

A. be taken by or feature a city council member/mayor; or

B. be taken in a council chamber; and

C. be a true selfie — i.e. taken by someone in the picture.

In a few weeks, we will have a municipal selfie expert on the podcast to help judge the best city hall art! That being said, here are the top 10:

10. Waldo, Florida

A first-ever selfie on #CityHallSelfie Day! That is well worth a shout-out, and the execution is flawless. Now that he’s hooked, I expect to see Waldo’s mayor all over Instagram in short order.

9. Corvallis, Oregon

An aspirational city council selfie! It is Part One of a story. Maybe next year we will see Part Two–inside city hall pointing out.

8. Cary, North Carolina

Two words: Snapchat filter. Teens of Cary, I hope you took advantage. This selfie demonstrates advance planning by the graphics department and a technological prowess that is uncommon among council members. Also, do you see that bitmoji? It looks exactly like her!

7. Tigard, Oregon

Who doesn’t like a mayor on the move? Thank you for inspecting the grounds and also for showcasing the range of municipal signage options.

6. Provo, Utah

#CityHallSelfie Day celebrates local government’s strengths, but it’s also important to acknowledge flaws–in this case, some minor defects in the city hall building. Maybe this council member’s “tale of two city halls” will be enough to get some patching done ASAP.

5. Glendale, Arizona

If you’re wondering about the mayor’s location, scroll through the pictures to see where he is and how he got there. It takes a village–or in this case, a public works department!

4. Gaithersburg, Maryland

Gaithersburg was on our list last year for the same reason they are this year: their amazingly high level of esprit de corps in city council selfies. Three cameras? Golf claps all around, my friends.

3. Bel Aire, KS

It’s high time we appreciated the people who beam city council meetings onto screens and monitors around the globe. Thank you for your service and DON’T SPILL THAT DRINK ON THE CONTROL PANEL! (Also, empty seats in the chamber? Come on, Bel Aire, I want that budget discussion to be standing-room only next Selfie Day.)

2. Littleton, Colorado

Littletonians have Council Member Kyle Schlachter to thank for this theatrical series of selfies, which includes color-coordinated Australians, a fake (we think) kangaroo, and a selfie in front of his own official portrait. Put this in the category for “most eclectic props.”

1. Austin, Texas

This selfie is perfect because it illustrates one of the most important acts of service any person can perform: sitting at home watching a city council meeting. Citizen, for doing what I do every day–only with a dog–I salute you.

Bonus: The hottest take

Amen.
